Sea Moss Me — peak health is true wealth

Sea Moss 101

The honest explainer on sea moss

Sea moss has had a strange decade. For most of its history it was an unglamorous Caribbean pantry staple. Then it hit the internet and became a miracle. The truth is somewhere more useful than either version — and it takes about eight minutes to explain.

First principles

A sea vegetable with no roots at all

Sea moss is a nutrient-dense red algae that grows wild on coastal rocks in clean, moving ocean water. In Jamaica the common species is Gracilaria — the slender, golden-brown moss you'll see drying in the sun along the south coast.

Unlike land plants, it has no true roots. It anchors to rock with a holdfast, used purely for grip. Every nutrient it carries is absorbed directly through its fronds from the seawater around it.

That single fact explains almost everything else about sea moss. Water quality is not a detail — it is the entire product. Cleaner, more mineral-rich water produces denser, richer moss. Moss grown in a tank and fed table salt produces exactly what you'd expect.

Soaked and blended, it becomes a neutral, faintly ocean-scented gel that thickens whatever you put it in. That gel texture comes from its natural mucilage — the same property that makes it soothing to the digestive tract.

The short version

A whole food with an unusually wide mineral profile — not a medicine, and not a miracle.

Why it matters

Minerals are essential, not optional

The nervous, endocrine, digestive and immune systems all depend on minerals to function. When intake falls short, the effects are the ones modern life has quietly normalised.

Fatigue that sleep doesn't fixBrain fog and poor concentrationRestless or unrefreshing sleepCatching everything going aroundLow or unpredictable mood
  • Iodine

    Thyroid & energy

The thyroid cannot make its hormones without iodine, and those hormones set the pace of your metabolism.

  • Magnesium

    Mood, sleep & nerves

Involved in hundreds of enzyme reactions; low levels show up first as poor sleep and a short fuse.

  • Potassium

    Fluid balance & nerves

Works with sodium to keep nerve signalling and hydration steady.

  • Zinc

    Immunity & repair

Central to immune response and to how quickly the body repairs tissue.

  • Iron

    Oxygen transport

Carries oxygen through the blood — the difference between energy and fog.

  • B vitamins

    Energy conversion

Turn the food you eat into energy your cells can actually spend.

About that mineral count

Sea moss is often said to carry up to 92 of the minerals and vitamins the human body needs. It is a genuinely broad profile — but it is not a multivitamin in a jar, and no honest seller should tell you it is. What sea moss offers is a whole food, in a form your body recognises, that fills gaps a processed diet leaves behind. That is a smaller claim than the internet makes, and a more useful one.

How to buy it well

Wildcrafted or pool-grown — the difference shows

Two jars can look identical and be completely different products. The word that decides it rarely appears on the front of the label, so here is how to tell.

Three questions to ask any seller

  1. 01

    Is it wildcrafted or pool-grown?

  2. 02

    Where exactly was it harvested?

  3. 03

What else is in the jar?

We answer all three on every jar: wildcrafted, hand-cut on the south coast of Jamaica, and nothing in the jar but sea moss, spring water and whole superfoods.

Worth knowing

Six things about sea moss most people don't know

  • It is algae, not a plant

Sea moss is a red algae that grows wild on coastal rock in clean, moving water. It cannot simply be farmed anywhere — the water decides.

  • It has no roots at all

It anchors to rock with a holdfast used purely for grip. Every nutrient is absorbed directly through its fronds from the surrounding seawater.

  • People have harvested it for 14,000 years

Archaeological evidence places sea moss among the oldest continuously used sea vegetables in human history.

  • Its colour is not fixed

The same plant ranges from deep purple to golden yellow to almost black, adjusting its pigment to how much sunlight reaches it underwater.

  • Water quality is the whole story

Because nutrients come straight from the sea, cleaner and more mineral-rich water produces denser, richer moss. It is why we will only buy wildcrafted.

  • It is naturally iodine-rich

Which is exactly why it supports thyroid function — and exactly why anyone managing a thyroid condition should talk to their doctor first.

Everyday practice

How to actually take it

It doesn't need to be a ritual to work. It needs to be consistent.

Pick a jar to start with
  1. 01

    Start with one tablespoon

Take it in the morning, ideally fifteen minutes before your first meal so the mucilage has time to settle.

  2. 02

Put it in something you already drink

Smoothies, tea, coffee, oatmeal, soup as a thickener — or straight off the spoon if you like the taste.

  3. 03

Drink more water than feels necessary

Any fibre works with water and stalls without it. One extra glass a day is enough.

  4. 04

    Give it three weeks

Mineral repletion is slow. Most people notice something in week two or three, not day two.

Common questions

The rest of it

Sea moss (Irish moss) is a mineral-rich sea vegetable. Ours is wildcrafted — hand-harvested, never farmed — from clean coastal waters in Jamaica, then cleaned, sun-dried and gelled in small batches. Nothing is imported, pooled or bought from a broker.

Most customers take 1–2 tablespoons daily — blended into smoothies, stirred into tea, coffee or oatmeal, or eaten straight off the spoon. Start with one tablespoon and adjust to what feels right for you.

Nothing is blended until you confirm, so we arrange the delivery day with you directly when we reply — usually within one business day of your order. Jars are kept chilled and handed over fresh, which is the advantage of delivering locally rather than posting anything.

Local delivery only — Broward and Dade County. These are the only places we deliver to. The moss is still wildcrafted in Jamaica; the gel is blended and delivered here. Delivery is $8.95, free on any order of three jars or more. If you are outside the area, write to us and we will let you know when that changes.

Each flavour's full ingredient list is on its product page. Everything is vegan, gluten-free, dairy-free and free from added sugar, fillers and preservatives. If you have specific allergies, add a note with your order and we'll confirm before we blend anything.

Our 8 oz jar holds roughly 16 tablespoons — about two weeks at one tablespoon a day, or one week if you take two. Most people settle into a jar every two to three weeks once it becomes routine.
